TED Talk with Marc Kushner

Love my TED talks; love this one on Architecture!

I just love listening to TED Talks, the nonprofit organization that offers short, powerful talks on a variety of topics. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics, from science and business to global issues and design, in more than 100 languages.

I just listened to a recent TED Talk with Marc Kushner, a practicing architect who splits his time between designing buildings at HWKN, the architecture firm he cofounded, and Architizer.com, the largest platform for architecture and design online, hosting projects uploaded by designers themselves. Both have the same mission: to reconnect the public with architecture.

“Architecture is not about math or zoning — it’s about visceral emotions,” says Kushner. In his sweeping talk, he examines the past thirty years of architecture to show how the public, once disconnected, have now become an essential part of the design process. The result? Amazing buildings all around the world — created with your help.

Kushner’s core belief is that architecture touches everyone, and according to him, everyone is a fan of architecture, even if they don’t know it yet. New forms of media empower people to shape and built their own environment, and that means better buildings, which make better cities, which make a better world. To that end he wrote the newly published TED Book The Future of Architecture in 100 Buildings.
