Sotheby's art auction

Latin Art – Sotheby’s Auction House, New York City, May 26, 2015

If you are a fan of Latin Art, you won’t want to miss this Sotheby’s auction, “Latin America: The Legacy of Abstraction” is set for May 26 in New York City. The auction includes a selection of works from leading artists that explore the essence and impact of abstraction in Latin America throughout the 20th century. Artists represented in this landmark sale include: Lucio Fontana, Carlos Cruz Diez, Jesús Rafael Soto, Mira Schendel, León Ferrari, Mathias Goeritz, Alejandro Otero and Lygia Clark, amongst others.

My personal favorite in this sale includes two untitled works from Mira Schendel, executed in the early 1980s. The magnificent drawings embody the artist’s mastery of monochromatic formalism. While undeniably fragile in their delicate transparency, both works convey a decidedly elegant treatment of absolute color. Here, at its most essential, formalism gives way to the spiritual through the subtle interplay of minimal golden details; medieval notions of the divine that overcome the clamor of much contemporary painting.

In case you are not aware of this Brazilian artist, Schendel is probably best known for her drawings on rice paper, although she was also a brilliant painter and sculptor. In a Sotheby’s Latin art auction last year, Schendel’s “Sin titulo” (Untitled) from the “Droguinha” (Little drug) series sold for $557,000. Sotheby’s sold $34 million worth of Latin art last year alone. And just another note, check out the amazing auction results from the recent “100-Carat Perfect Diamond Leads Jewellery Sale/Sotheby’s,” which brought in a total $65,086,500, a record for a jewelry auction at Sotheby’s New York

The popularity of Latin art is growing. According to a report in the Economist titled “Art from Brazil: Tropical Growth,” Brazilian art is highly sought after by curators and collectors today.
